Topos Quantum Theory

Origin. Christopher Isham and Jeremy Butterfield, "A topos perspective on the Kochen–Specker theorem" I–IV (International Journal of Theoretical Physics: I, 37, 1998, 2669–2733; II, 38, 1999, 827–859; III, with J. Hamilton, 39, 2000, 1413–1436; IV, 41, 2002, 613–639), recast the Kochen–Specker theorem as a statement about presheaves. Andreas Döring and Christopher Isham, "A topos foundation for theories of physics" I–IV (Journal of Mathematical Physics 49, 2008) and "'What is a thing?': Topos theory in the foundations of physics" (New Structures for Physics, Lecture Notes in Physics 813, 2011, 753–940), built the contravariant program around daseinisation. Chris Heunen, Nicolaas Landsman, and Bas Spitters, "A topos for algebraic quantum theory" (Communications in Mathematical Physics 291, 2009, 63–110), is the covariant program.

Models. Quantum mechanics rebuilt inside a topos, so that contextuality is carried by the geometry of the model instead of recorded as an algebraic failure. Where Partial Boolean Algebras keeps the classical contexts and refuses to glue them, topos quantum theory glues them at the level of presheaves: the spectral presheaf assembles the Gelfand spectra of all commutative subalgebras into a single object, and the Kochen–Specker theorem becomes the statement that this object has no global elements — the system has a state object but no microstates, the same obstruction Partial Boolean Algebras states as the non-existence of a global section. The internal logic is intuitionistic, as in any topos (Topos Logic), so the algebraic responses to quantum structure — orthomodular lattices, Effect Algebras, partial Boolean algebras — are answered here by changing the ambient mathematics rather than the propositional operations: distribution returns and excluded middle is lost.

Formalism.

Context categories: V(H): the poset of abelian von Neumann subalgebras of B(H), ordered by inclusion — each V a classical perspective on the system. C(A): the poset of commutative C*-subalgebras of a C*-algebra A, for the covariant program.

Spectral presheaf (contravariant program): Σ : V(H)^op → Set, with Σ(V) the Gelfand spectrum of V; restriction maps restrict characters to smaller contexts. An object of the presheaf topos on V(H); the quantum analogue of a classical state space (Döring–Isham II).

Kochen–Specker, geometrically (Isham–Butterfield I, 1998): The Kochen–Specker theorem is equivalent to: the spectral presheaf has no global elements. A global element would pick a point of each context's spectrum compatibly across inclusions — exactly a noncontextual valuation of all observables. Döring (2005): the spectral presheaf of any von Neumann algebra without type I₁ and I₂ summands has no global elements (International Journal of Theoretical Physics 44, 139–160). Quantum states yield generalized valuations instead: contextual, sieve-valued truth assignments (Isham–Butterfield I).

Daseinisation (Döring–Isham II, 2008): δᵒ(P̂): a projection P̂ is sent to a clopen subobject of Σ — in each context V, the smallest projection of V above P̂, read as a clopen subset of Σ(V). A proposition A ε Δ — the quantity A has a value in Δ — is represented by daseinising its spectral projection. Subcl(Σ): the clopen subobjects of Σ, a complete Heyting algebra; in fact a complete bi-Heyting algebra (Döring 2012), with a Heyting and a co-Heyting negation.

Bohrification (Heunen–Landsman–Spitters 2009): T(A): the topos of covariant Set-valued functors on C(A). A̲: the functor C ↦ C — the commutative subalgebras amalgamated into one internal commutative C*-algebra of T(A). By the constructive Gelfand duality of Banaschewski and Mulvey, A̲ has an internal Gelfand spectrum Σ(A̲): a locale in T(A), the quantum phase space, whose opens form a Heyting algebra.

The two programs (Wolters, Communications in Mathematical Physics 317, 2012, 3–53): Contravariant: presheaves on V(H); propositions in the external Heyting algebra Subcl(Σ); daseinisation of projections and self-adjoint operators. Covariant: copresheaves on C(A); propositions in the internal locale Σ(A̲); Wolters defined a covariant daseinisation arrow to compare the two.

Metatheory. Isham and Butterfield (1998) proved the Kochen–Specker theorem equivalent to the non-existence of global elements of their presheaf, moving a combinatorial impossibility into the geometry of a topos, and Döring (2005) extended the non-existence to every von Neumann algebra without type I₁ and I₂ summands. Döring and Isham (2008) established that the clopen subobjects of the spectral presheaf form a complete Heyting algebra, so quantum propositions obey a distributive, intuitionistic logic; Döring (2012) sharpened this to a complete bi-Heyting algebra. Heunen, Landsman, and Spitters (2009) proved that the Bohrification of a unital C*-algebra is an internal commutative C*-algebra whose Gelfand spectrum exists internally as a locale, by the Gelfand duality of Banaschewski and Mulvey, whose constructive proof holds internally. Both ambient toposes are presheaf toposes over posets, so the internal logic is intuitionistic higher-order logic (Topos Logic), evaluated by Kripke–Joyal forcing, and a presheaf topos on a poset is Kripke semantics with contexts as stages (Sheaf Semantics). Wolters (2012) carried out the comparison of the two programs, giving the covariant daseinisation arrow and relating the external Heyting algebra of the contravariant side to the internal locale of the covariant side.

Applies to. Quantum foundations: contextuality as geometry, beside the partial-algebra account in Partial Boolean Algebras. Intuitionistic quantum logic, as the distributive alternative to the orthomodular tradition. The internal Gelfand spectrum as a phase-space substitute for noncommutative algebras. Philosophy of physics, where the generalized valuations give truth values to all propositions at once, contextually. Formal-language foundations for physical theories, the stated aim of the Döring–Isham quartet.

Limitations. There is no dynamics: Döring and Isham pose, as an open question, whether time should be an object of the topos or an external parameter, and the construction as published is kinematics. The input is the operator algebra that standard quantum mechanics already supplies, and the reformulation inherits its empirical content. The qubit escapes: type I₂ algebras are excluded from the Kochen–Specker result, so for M₂(ℂ) the spectral presheaf has global elements and the construction loses its motivating obstruction — the same dimension-2 escape recorded in Partial Boolean Algebras. There are two programs, not one: presheaves against copresheaves, external against internal logic, and relating them is a technical undertaking in its own right (Wolters 2012). Daseinisation coarse-grains — each context sees a proposition only through the smallest projection it contains above it — so distinct projections can enter a small context identically. And the Heyting negation is not an orthocomplement: it is not involutive and excluded middle fails, so the logic of Subcl(Σ) does not extend orthomodular quantum logic but replaces it.
