Perspective Enumeration

Origin. The structure appears most explicitly in Indian traditions. Anekantavada (Jain seven-fold predication), Catuskoti (Buddhist four-cornered logic). The pattern addresses a fundamental cognitive limit: we fixate on one or two positions and miss the full logical space.

Mechanism. Apparent contradictions often arise because different positions capture different aspects of the same reality. Asserting "X is true" and "X is false" seem contradictory, but both may hold in different respects, at different times, or under different interpretations. Premature closure — settling on one position without mapping the space — produces false confidence and missed insight. Systematic enumeration of positions prevents this by making the full logical space explicit before judgment.

Procedure. Map the logical space of positions on any claim. For any proposition P: (1) Consider P as true — under what conditions, in what respects? (2) Consider P as false — under what conditions, in what respects? (3) Consider P as both true and false — in different aspects, at different times, in different contexts. (4) Consider P as neither true nor false — perhaps the question is malformed, the categories don't apply, or the presuppositions are false. Work through each position asking: what would make this coherent? What assumptions does it require? The goal is not to select one position but to understand the space before selecting. Apparent contradictions often dissolve when you see that disputants occupy different positions in the space.

Applies to. Philosophical analysis. Resolving disputes where parties hold apparently incompatible views. Examining your own beliefs for hidden assumptions. Any situation where premature closure threatens clear thinking.

Limitations. Can become a machine for generating complexity rather than insight — mapping positions is not the same as resolving questions. The method does not tell you which position matters for your purpose. Requires intellectual discipline to use for clarification rather than obfuscation or avoidance. Some questions genuinely have binary answers; not everything benefits from enumeration.
