Lotus Blossom
Origin. Yasuo Matsumura; Japanese creativity technique.
Mechanism. Systematic expansion from a central theme through concentric layers. The central idea generates eight related themes, and each of those generates eight more, producing 64 peripheral ideas connected back to the center through explicit intermediate steps.
Procedure. Write the central theme in the center of a 3×3 grid. Fill the eight surrounding cells with related themes or aspects. Take each of those eight and make it the center of its own 3×3 grid, filling the surrounding cells with ideas related to that theme. The result is a 9×9 grid with 64 peripheral ideas and clear provenance.
Applies to. Systematic exploration of a concept; ensuring coverage when diverging; maintaining connection between peripheral ideas and the core.
Limitations. The structure can become mechanical — filling cells because cells need filling, not because the ideas are valuable. Eight is arbitrary; some themes have three natural aspects, some have twelve. Force-fitting distorts.
