Methods as they were actually developed: tradition-bound, indexed first by the lineage that produced them and then by the domain they were built for. A specific method carries the assumptions of its birthplace — the organizations, time horizons, constraints, and problem types it was designed around — and knowing that provenance is what lets you judge whether it transfers.
The tradition level is provenance, not apparatus. Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Russian Imperial, Slavic, Soviet, and Western say where a method came from, not what kind of thing it is. The domain level beneath differs from tradition to tradition, because each tradition worked on different problems under different constraints; the domains are not a shared second axis and are not meant to be.
