Time Shifting

Origin. Scenario planning; historical counterfactual.

Mechanism. Relocates the problem to another period, where the available technology, cost structure, and social constraints differ. Solutions that were correct under other constraints reveal which of the current constraints are actually doing work.

Procedure. Solve the problem as it would have been solved in 1850, 1950, 2050. Compare the three solutions. The differences track the constraints; the invariants track the problem.

Applies to. Separating the problem from its current technological framing.

Limitations. The 2050 solution is a projection of present trends and carries no information the present did not already contain. The retrospective directions are the informative ones.
