Stepwise Formation of Mental Actions
Origin. Pyotr Galperin, Soviet psychology, 1950s-1970s. Developed as a systematic method for teaching concepts and skills by externalizing mental operations and gradually internalizing them. Based on Vygotsky's framework but operationalized into a teachable procedure.
Mechanism. Mental actions do not form by passive absorption or unguided practice. They form through a sequence of transformations: from external, material action to internal, mental operation. Each stage has different properties — material actions are slow but correctable; mental actions are fast but opaque. The method makes the transition explicit and controllable. By starting with physical manipulation and ending with silent thought, the learner builds reliable mental operations rather than fragile imitations.
Procedure. Teach any concept or skill through five stages: (1) Orientation — provide a complete orienting basis: what the action is, what it achieves, what steps it involves, what features to attend to. The learner sees the whole before doing anything. (2) Materialized action — the learner performs the action with physical objects or written symbols, manipulating external representations. Every step is visible and correctable. (3) Verbal action (overt speech) — the learner performs the action while speaking aloud, describing each step. The physical objects are removed; speech carries the structure. (4) Verbal action (inner speech) — the learner performs the action with subvocal speech, abbreviated. The action is compressing. (5) Mental action — the action is fully internalized, automatic, silent. It operates without conscious verbal mediation. Each stage must be mastered before proceeding; skipping produces fragile performance.
Applies to. Teaching concepts in mathematics, science, language. Skill training. Any domain where reliable mental operations are the goal. Particularly effective for foundational concepts where errors compound.
Limitations. Requires careful design of the orienting basis — a poor one produces poor actions. Time-intensive; each stage takes practice. Not suited for discovery learning or creative tasks where the procedure is unknown. Assumes the correct action is known and teachable. The method produces reliable execution but not necessarily understanding of why the action works.
